WHO

A duo team of Graphic Design professors hatched this idea for a new design documentary. When they approached Nuevo Studio they had no name for the documentary nor idea for the visual identity. They both felt it was a film that needed to be crafted especially in today's climate.

The masterminds behind Redesigning HERstory approached Nuevo Studio with this idea and a plan on execution. They felt a woman-led agency needed to help them name the documentary and create the visual identity associated to this new film.

This documentary will begin filming in 2021-2022.

THE PROBLEM + SOLUTION

This documentary does not focus on one industry niche but Graphic Design as a whole. It also doesn't focus on only one woman or era in the design history spectrum. Our first challenge was to come up with a name for the documentary. Knowing that so many women who have affected the design industry have been long forgotten or their work has been credited to agencies or creative directors (mainly men) we knew the research found from this documentary would disrupt the history timeline we have been taught in school. We also wanted the name to be easy to remember but hint to what it was about without being too clever.

The second problem we encountered was how to brand this documentary that paid homage to all the women that will be represented without highlighting one or the other. Playing off the idea of disrupting the timeline, we used elements of design to disrupt the grid. We didn't want something overtly feminine so when we had the chance to collaborate with Nina Stoessinger,  type designer from Frere Jones Type Foundry, we knew we wanted to use her italic version of Conductor. Using something strong and bold yet delicate was the perfect combination for this visual identity system.
